they're banking on john boehner showing up who has a record of not showing up. and the democrats could be very well in the position at the end of the day saying, well, you know, we took a vote in the senate, not a whole lot of republicans voted for it. and this is just the way it's coming down, this is our governmental system. reid is giving, as i see it, the gop a chance to show they are compassionate, that john boehner does have a pulse, that he's willing to be trusted. and if it doesn't happen, how many more of these votes are going to be taken by the democrats down the road counting on john boehner. and i think this is a pivotal vote. i really do. your thoughts on all of that. >> pivotal is a great word. i like to think of it as a defining moment for the republicans. are they really the party that doesn't care at all about, you know, what romney called the 47%? the people they think are the takers in this country? i mean, you only think that way if you don't know anybody who lost his or her job. you only think that way if you never lost your job. and you onl

john boehner? you want me to do that? democrats want me to change john boehner's mind? give me a break. you had a vote. you threw me to the side of the road. what type of strategy is this? well, here's the memo. i'm just an unemployed guy, watching "the ed show," and they tell me that, well, it's not on their legislative agenda for january. they want people with no money to show up in washington and do a rally? the unemployed? i mean, we can barely put food on the table? there's no way that they can afford gas and travel expenses to go to washington, d.c. hell, i've got to stay in my house. i've got to pay the rent. there is nothing that is going to break the will of john boehner and the republicans. there was a time in that town called washington, d.c., when a senate vote, and i kind of follow this stuff a little bit -- the senate vote actually meant something. it was kind of the pulse of the country that you could kind of count on the house to follow. well, those days are over. i don't think there is anything that will move the republicans on unemployment, unless ther

do you think it will be a priority for john boehner in the house? >> well, it certainly is a priority. in the senate. and therefore, there's going to be a lot of pressure put on boehner to do it. look, every month that it isn't done, 72,000 more people lose their benefits. this isn't just a one-time deal. and as you pointed out, it's really good for the economy. and the other side of that is it's really bad for the economy. if we don't extend those benefits. we could be talking about 250,000 jobs lost. so if the republicans hope to barely make the case that they really are for jobs in this country, then they're going to extend those unemployment insurance benefits. >> well, i want to talk health care for just a moment. >> sure. >> back in the bush years when we were talking about a surge, we were talking about war. now when we're talking about surge, we're talking about health care for more americans. these enrollment numbers, before the dead line for the month of december, i believe, are very impressive. we're now closing in on 2 million people who

house speaker john boehner couldn't agree more with mcconnell. he's been for a long time a vocal opponent of extending without offsets. they love offsets. how are you going to pay for it? boehner released a statement saying, without cuts and job incentives, the house, they're not going to be looking at this extension anytime soon. the house is going to remain focused on growing the economy and giving america's unemployed the independence that only comes from finding a good job. i'll tell you what. there's a guy that speaks out of both sides of his mouth. in fact, in their big memo that they had come out last friday, there was nothing in there about job creation. it looks like speak eer boehner has been attending the rand paul school of backward thinking in economics. it's hard to find a job if you don't have enough money to get to the next interview. president obama met with a group of unemployed americans today to tell the story from the white house. >> unemployment insurance has been a vital economic lifeline. for a lot of people, it's the only

john boehner is the key player in all of this. in his home district 63% thinks there should be an extension. is he representing the people's views? it's about time boehner started speaking to his own krae constituents. we have trains and planes and schedules disrupted. we have this thing called wind chill. 50 below this morning in detroit. i've never done the weather before. i kind of like this. here it is from north dakota all the way past chicago to detroit, we are below zero. we know these states don't have people who are losing their unemployment benefits. this is where it is cruel. no one can control the weather. not everybody can control their employment situation. not only can't we stop the wind from blowing, but we can't stop the republicans from being heartless and cruel. we need to be taking certainly some special measurements to help people who have been unemployed for a long time. it's not just extending the benefits another 90 days. it's dealing with an economic problem in this country that is income inequality. where
